Classifying Animals

We started out by observing each other and discussing the ways that we were the same and different. Next, I gave the children a set of organisms cards and challenged them to sort the cards as a team by whatever criteria they chose.  Some sorted by habitats (land, water, air), others sorted by families (bird, insect, fish, mammal). There was quite a lively and informative discussion afterward. I gave a short lesson about another way of sorting – vertebrates and invertebrates (more on that next week). Finally, the students read and colored a book of animal opposites.
