Investigating Rocks and Minerals

Today, student teams were given a tray of rock and mineral samples to examine. They were challenged to choose a criteria by which to sort the samples. Teams then presented their sorted samples and challenged the rest of the students to guess the criteria that was used. This investigation led to a lesson focused on the key concepts

  • Rocks are made of minerals
  • Different rocks have different properties
  • The properties of rocks reflect the way they were formed and the minerals in them
  • Rocks can be igneous, metamorphic or sedimentary
  • Rock size is changed by weathering and erosion
